P4-7 Workshops
Weather Investigators P4-7 90 mins
Following a presenter-led indoor introduction to the weather, pupils will move outside to work in small teams to record the weather in their team’s weather log. To do this they will visit 8 weather stations in turn. At each station they will find a laminated instruction card and the equipment necessary to measure one aspect of the weather. All teams will visit all stations (weather and time-permitting!). The workshop will conclude indoors with a review of the pupils’ results and a discussion about what they learned.
PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will take place outside in all weathers as long as it safe to do so. Pupils AND teachers must provide suitable clothing for themselves – K’NEXT Generation does NOT provide clothing.

Energy Investigators P4-7 60 mins
Following a presenter-led introduction and class discussion about food, energy and exercise, pupils will work in small teams to calculate how many calories they use during 5 minutes of exercise. This will involve weighing, timing, counting, simple step-by-step calculations and following written instructions (as well as vigorous exercise!). Help and guidance will be provided throughout. The workshop will conclude by relating the pupils results to the calories found in a MacDonald’s meal and a discussion about healthy eating and exercise.

Building Bridges (K'NEX) P4-7 60 mins
Working in teams of 3, pupils are challenged to work together to use K'NEX to build a bridge to span a gap. The workshop begins with a presenter-led group discussion, using photographs of a range of bridges, to introduce the ideas of designing for a purpose, time management and resource management. Engineering, teamwork and communication skills are then exercised during the build phase of the workshop as teams must work together to realise their vision in limited time. The workshop concludes with a brief "Show & Tell" session, which includes model testing - sometimes to destruction!

Wonderful Wind (K'NEX) P4-7 60 mins
Using specially designed K'NEX kits, small teams will work together to design and build their own windmill to compete in the 'Wonderful Wind Challenge'. Following a brief introduction about wind, its uses and wind power, the teams will have time to design, build, test and investigate ways of improving their windmills to determine the most efficient design. The windmills will be judged and the merits of each design discussed in the presenter-led conclusion to this workshop.

Solar Science (K'NEX) P4-7 60 mins
Following a presenter-led discussion introducing solar power and gears, teams of 3 pupils will design and build their own solar powered gear trains. The teams will then demonstrate how their models work and explain how they solved any problems they encountered. Finally, there will be an opportunity to improve their designs to see who can build the longest working gear train.
K'NEXT Generation would like to thank Data Harvest for providing some of the equipment for this workshop.

Programmable Robots (K'NEX) P4-7 60 mins
This workshop introduces programming in a fun, exciting and challenging way. Pupils work in teams of 3 to build their robot, to programme it, and then undertake a series of increasingly complex challenge boards: Novice, Intermediate and Ultimate. Important principles of programming and fair-testing are explored and team-work, communication and problem-solving skills are encouraged and developed.

It's not Rocket Science! (K'NEX) P4-7 60 mins
Following a presenter-led discussion about rocket power, pupils will learn about forces and energy while working in teams of 3, as they design and build their own rocket powered vehicle. Each team will then have a chance to demonstrate how their model works, explain any problems they encountered and how they solved them, and describe the forces and energy changes at work in their model.

K'NEX ENTERPRISE (K'NEX) P5-7 Half-day
Pupils will work in teams of 5 or 6 to carry out a K'NEX Enterprise project. Each Enterprise team will design and build a K'NEX toy, model or gizmo. They will have to cost and price their idea, design and produce the packaging materials and any instructions required, design and produce the marketing materials and calculate how much profit they expect to make. Each Enterprise team will then present their project to the rest of the class. A certificate will be provided for the winning team.
Maths - I don't believe it! (K'NEX) P6-7 60 mins
An active learning mathematical workshop that will challenge traditional attitudes towards maths. Travelling around the world with a companion, each pair of pupils will collect stamps in their passport from the countries they visit by solving a mathematical conundrum from that country. Everyone is guaranteed to succeed, especially those that don't usually enjoy maths. Maths - engaging and inspiring - you'd better believe it!
